Compassionate Psychotherapy

for Adults & Teens

September update: I will be accepting new clients for limited in-office (Tue) and telehealth (Wed-Fri) sessions starting September 2024.

I believe we are all on this journey called Life together. Whether we want it or not, Life brings us storms, challenges, endings, and beginnings.

I believe in the power of one person helping another, and the strength that comes from being seen, listened to, and understood.

As your therapist, I bring to the table an open mind, a sensitivity to your culture and upbringing, and a value on collaboration.

Do any of the following sound familiar?

You are on the path of self-discovery and growth. You are conscious of wanting to do things differently than your parents or previous generations did. You are seeking to define yourself outside of your family’s views and expectations of you.

You are experiencing difficulty or relationship challenges with your partner or loved ones.

You or your family member are a first or second generation immigrant whose life has been touched by loss, separation, trauma, or poverty.

You have survived the loss of a loved one or are going through the end of a relationship or marriage.

You are feeling overwhelmed by the roles of being a parent, child, partner, and/or employee, and struggle with balancing the responsibilities of these roles.

You have difficulty making connections with others due to shyness, low self-esteem, or feeling socially awkward.

about Marrah

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW #28771) specializing in the treatment of adults and children in the San Francisco Bay Area. I offer individual psychotherapy and counseling services.

I was born in the Philippines and immigrated to the United States at a young age. Growing up within and between two cultures has afforded me a unique perspective which I bring into my private practice and work with clients.

I have lived in the Bay Area for over 30 years. I am proud to call the Bay Area my home and to be a product of the cultural and socioeconomic diversity here.

I am passionate about working with immigrants, children of immigrants, women, people of color, and young and old alike who may have a story that is not acknowledged or understood by larger mainstream culture.

I encourage Filipinos/Filipino-Americans, Asian/Asian Americans, professionals, and/or millennials who are interested in therapy services to contact me and find out how therapy can enhance their life. I am bilingual in English and Tagalog. I also speak some Spanish.

I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 2012 and have been providing social work and therapy services since 2002.

Frequently asked questions

  • Therapy is effective and has long-lasting effects.  If you are suffering from anxiety or depression, it can be very difficult to problem-solve and develop new coping strategies on your own. As human beings, we are social creatures who thrive on interactions with others. Modern day technology has transformed much of these interactions. Nonetheless, our basic wiring has not changed - healing occurs best in a social context where there is trust, support, and safety.

Therapy is an investment in yourself. Therapy gives you the time and opportunity to examine yourself in a protected and confidential space. In your therapy session, you can explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors without fear of judgment. You are free to ask questions and wonder “out loud”. You will be able to re-visit uncomfortable topics or experiences with the support of a trained professional.

  • Yes.  At the end of your first session, I will share my recommendations about the length of treatment.  Most people experience immediate relief even after just a few sessions. I provide both brief therapy (6-8 sessions) as well as long-term therapy (6 months or longer). I generally recommend treatment for at least 3-6 months in order to reap the most benefits from the therapy process. Therapy services may be partially covered by your health insurance or employee benefit plan.

  • It’s true that therapy can seem like a big expense, but most people who have tried it will happily report that the cost was minimal compared to the life-long benefits they received from it.  Good therapy brings about positive changes that extend beyond the immediate problem.

Good therapy improves quality of life, removes internal blocks and obstacles, preserves relationships, increases confidence and self-esteem, and instills a sense of peace.  In addition therapy provides long-lasting benefits. You get to keep the tools and skills you learn in therapy long after your final session is over.

  • I am currently not on any insurance provider panels and do not deal directly with any insurance companies. I am an "Out of Network provider" for insurance purposes. A good first step is to contact your insurance company and ask the following questions:

What are my mental health benefits?

How much does my plan cover for an Out-of-Network provider?

What is my deductible and has it been met?

What is the coverage amount per therapy session?

Is approval required from my primary care physician?

  • Therapy is most effective when there are regular and consistent sessions. Sessions typically occur on a weekly basis but can be flexible based on your needs and schedule. In the beginning stage of treatment, it is best to meet on a weekly basis to establish a routine and become comfortable with the therapy process.

  • Yes. I use a HIPAA compliant web-based platform called Simple Practice. It is simple and easy to use with no need to download any software or create an account when using your computer or laptop to connect. To use a mobile device, clients can download an app onto their smartphone.

Web-based therapy sessions (also known as TeleHealth sessions) are great if you have a busy work schedule or long commute, do not have transportation or mobility to get to my office, or cannot find a therapist in your town that meets your specific cultural or treatment needs.
